The Ypsilanti High School Air Force JROTC program was one of 72 units in the nation to receive the 2009-10 Air Force Junior ROTC Distinguished Unit Award with Merit. This award recognizes Air Force JROTC programs that have exceeded standards and distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while accomplishing the mission of producing better citizens for American. There are 884 Air Force JROTC programs in the U.S. with over 110,000 cadets enrolled.

Ypsilanti High School's Air Force JROTC receives Distinguished Unit Award - 2008-2009 School Year
The program is less than a year old and already the Ypsilanti High School Air Force Junior ROTC program has garnered a national award. The YHS unit is the only Jr. ROTC in the state, this year, to receive the nod from the Air Force as a "Distinguished Unit."

There are 879 high school programs in the United States and just under 400 units received the award. It is very unusual for a first year program to garner this award and YHS Air Force JROTC instructor Col. Michael Stinson is pleased with the recognition.

"The students in the program have exceeded our expectations during this foundational year," Stinson said. "They have demonstrated the skills, knowledge and leadership abilities to make the Ypsilanti High School JROTC a top notch organization. We are very proud of the progress and transformation student cadets have made in a short amount of time."

This is the second honor the program has received this academic year. In February, the Air Force announced that sophomore Adryan Robinson was selected to attend the Aviation and Technology Honors Camp at the University of Oklahoma and nearby Tinker Air Force Base. He was the only JROTC student in Michigan selected for the summer camp.

The YHS unit has a host of activities lined up for the 2009-2010 schoolyear..
