March is Reading Month
"Book A Cop" Coming to Ypsilanti Public Schools
There's no jail time or fingerprinting involved in "Book a Cop," only a month long promotion of literacy. Members of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, including Sheriff Jerry Clayton, will spend the month of March volunteering to read to Ypsilanti Public Schools' first grade students. The activity is part of "March is Reading Month" celebrations.

Corporal Charles Ball of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is spearheading the effort and said the objective is to build relationships while promoting the importance of reading.

"We want students to feel comfortable with law enforcement personnel and this is one way to build a positive rapport with some of our youngest citizens," Ball said. "Our office is focusing on community engagement and this is a tangible way to connect with kids."

Following are the dates, times and locations that the Sheriff's staff will read and participate in classroom activities:
Adams STEM Academy - Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23, 30 from 9:15-10:15 a.m. (Sheriff Clayton will visit March 9)

Besides the Sheriff, a variety of staff will be involved including deputies, command officers, dispatchers, correction officers, Derrick Jackson, director of Community Engagement, and community service officers. For more information call: Sgt. King (734) 260-3197.

March is Reading Month
Adams Academy students will enjoy two visits from the Ypsilanti District Library's Navigator Bookmobile March 10 and 15. Students are also encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to snuggle with while reading during the March 29 "Camp Reading Day."

The theme for March is Reading Month is,'Book Dine - "All You Can Read." We have many activities planned to celebrate this month. We have scheduled authors, football players, representatives from the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Department, and Ron Wiedbusch and his dog Storm to read with our students. Students will also be involved in lots of fun and exciting activities that will encourage them to READ, READ, READ, during this month. Please look for the calendars that your child brought home in his/her backpack today, which shows the activities that they will be participating in during the month of March.

Pasta for Pennies
During the month of March, the Student Council and students of Adams S.T.E.M. Academy will be collecting money and donating it to the Children's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each classroom will have a gallon jug where students will collect coins. The classroom that collects the most money will win a Pasta Lunch provided by the OLIVE GARDEN. Please send in your spare change - Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, and Quarters... Every penny counts... Checks can be made payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Please consider helping the Student Council by joining us in supporting this worthy cause.

PE-NUT HEALTY TIP - Here we are in a new year. What are your resolutions? If eating healthier or being more active are on your list then you are in line with what we are doing in PE-NUT! Our teachers are working hard do to be healthy role models for your children. Some ways they are doing that is to drink water instead of pop, participate in the physical activity break with the students, walk with children during recess, bring healthy snacks to school, and talk about healthy choices, and on and on. Surrounding kids with adults that have healthy behaviors is important. We can’t expect children to make healthy choices if we don’t! So when you make a healthy choice, tell you children about it. Maybe you could even ask for their support for something you are trying to change! And remember that our path to success is often two steps forward and one backward! We all have plenty of room for improvement; we just need to start somewhere and do something…and walk the talk! Have a healthy day and year.

When you have a change in your phone number, it's imperative that you update your phone number with your child's school. A phone number is critical for contacting parents/guardians when a child is sick, has an emergency, missed the school bus or has an unexcused absence. An undated phone number also assures parents that they will receive important information through our automated phone system regarding school closings, special events or message from the Superintendent. Thank you for keeping the home-school connection current.
