The primary purpose of the transportation system is to transport for all eligible pupils from the vicinity of their homes to the school they attend. Use of transportation equipment for field trips, co-curricular activities and other authorized activities is permitted when it does not conflict with the primary purpose of home to school, school to home transportation.
In compiling the transportation routes, all applicable laws, rules and regulations of the State of Michigan, or its agencies, shall be strictly adhered to and all recommendations and suggestions shall be carefully considered.
Due to the fact that middle school students ride the same bus as high school students, it may be necessary for them to take a transfer bus from the high school to their middle school. In addition, transfer buses may be used between elementary schools.
General Transportation Information
Personal belongings: Be sure to put your child's name on all of his/her clothing. Lost personal belongings may be reclaimed at each appropriate school
Restricted items: Projects or items that cannot be held in the student's lap cannot be brought to school on the bus. (This includes ALL band instruments). Items cannot be piled on the seat, under the seat, in the aisle, or next to the driver. All items must remain in bags, boxes or containers and must be held by the student. Medication, glass bottles or glass objects are strictly forbidden on the school bus. No pets or animals are allowed on the bus regardless of size.
Schedules: Students should be at their scheduled bus stop five minutes prior to the bus arrival time. Buses have a 10 minute window for pick-up, five minutes prior to the scheduled time to five minutes after the scheduled time. The bus may be late due to new
route schedules, weather, traffic and/or other extenuating circumstances throughout the school year.
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten routes are adjusted just before school starts in September. Changes are also made during the first three weeks of school. Regular route times are estimates. Stops and times are subject to changes throughout the school year. If bus stops are
added or deleted, times will change.
Bus stops: Please send a note with your child to the principal for approval when he/she is to go to a place other than his/her home or scheduled bus stop (provided space is available). A NOTE FROM THE PARENT IS REQUIRED AND MUST BE APPROVED BY YOUR CHILD'S PRINCIPAL. THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT WILL NOT TRANSPORT ANY STUDENT TO ANY OTHER EXISTING BUS STOP WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE PRINCIPAL. All bus stops must be preapproved by the transportation supervisor. If your child is not going to ride the bus (in particular kindergarten and student support services students) call the transportation department at (734) 482-9557 to notify the driver. All parents should be aware that if your child does not board his/her assigned bus for 3 continuous days, the bus stop will be deactivated and the driver will not stop at the student's stop until the parent calls the Transportation Department and requests that the
stop be reactivated.
Reminder to all parents:
The law states, "the driver of a vehicle overtaking or meeting a school bus which has stopped and is displaying two alternating flashing red lights located at the same level shall bring the vehicle to a full stop not less than 20 feet from the school bus and shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the visual signals are no longer activated."
Severe Weather Closing Policy:
The district will use the Connect-Ed system to call all parents when schools are closed due to severe weather, road conditions or building mechanical problems. It is important that every student has a working telephone number on file at the school office. Please be sure your school secretary has a working phone number at all times. In addition we will continue to notify local radio and television stations concerning school closings or transportation delays. You may continue to monitor local media outlets throughout the school day when threatening weather approaches. If the announcement states that buses will run on MAIN ROADS ONLY, students living on gravel roads will not be picked up.
